The reception area is the information hub of the nursery for parents. Individual room noticeboards display daily food and sleep charts. The latest weekly newsletter can also be found here, along with selected information on useful local child-centred groups. Pegs, individual bags and shoe tidies are supplied for all children too. Reception is manned throughout the day, the front door is secured by an electronic lock video phone and CCTV operates in all areas of the building to ensure the safety and security of all children, staff, parents and visitors to Kidz Kabin.
The main hall is the biggest open space in the nursery, with high ceilings and plenty of natural light and is used primarily by the preschool age group. A versatile space, it is used for a host of different activities including yoga, sports education, music time, and obstacle courses. There is also a cosy corner packed with a range of exciting books and a space for science exploration.” The younger age groups are still able to access this area for many of the same activities at appropriate times throughout the day.
The Blue Room is an exclusive space for our under 2s, spread across two separate rooms to cater for the varying needs of both the younger babies and rising 2s.
The first space has a giant cosy corner, sand, water and messy play areas and lots of sensory equipment including a mirror tower and adaptable physical obstacle course to encourage first steps. With separate side rooms for sleeping and nappy changing and an outdoor space at the back, the Blue Room is a self-contained and safe environment for the youngest children at Kidz Kabin.
The newly refurbished second space boasts a giant shape and colour carpet for the new walkers, a wall mounted chalk board to encourage mark making, sand & water corner, a cosy space with mini sofas and a wigwam in addition to a host of new small world and construction resources to provide new challenges for the rising 2s. Adjacent to the reformatted Yellow Room (2-3yrs), the space also allows for a smooth transition when the time comes to move up.
The 2-3s room provides a range of stimulating activities for those moving up from the Blue Room and those joining us from 2 plus. Spread across two rooms, with a free flow between them, the first room is dedicated to messy play - with a giant sandpit (which can also be covered and used as a stage for other activities), an arts and crafts corner and space for freely accessible sand and water play.
The second space is a generous open plan area with a large home corner complete with utilities, food and table perfect for social gatherings. Adjacent to the home corner, children can access a range of dressing up clothes and props and see their transformation in a full length mirror. There are separate corners for both construction activities and small world play in addition to a cosy reading den for quiet time.
A separate third quiet room is used exclusively for those children who have an afternoon nap, allowing those left awake full access to both activity rooms.
Opened in Easter 2014, the brand new preschool room occupies the upstairs of the nursery. Remodelled with children in mind, it matches other areas of the nursery in providing dedicated spaces for sand/water play, arts & crafts and role play (complete with a kitchen corner and dressing up). Additionally, there is an ICT area with child-friendly keyboards, electronic microscopes, iPads and access to the very latest educational software. A host of new challenging resources including science exploration kits, a planetarium projector and much more guarantees to keep the most inquisitive minds engaged. A new multicultural circle time carpet is the focal point of the room, with space for all the children to come together, listen to stories and build their confidence in talking to a group. With a dedicated team of Early Years practioners, it is a fantastic springboard to school.
Covered with child friendly spongy AstroTurf, the outdoor space at the front of Kidz Kabin is used for small groups of children for a variety of physical activities but can also be used for smaller quiet activities in tough trays. Chalk and plastic boards line the walls allowing children to draw and paint freely. During the summer months, water games (including a big sprinkler!) provide refreshing fun.
Surrounded by parks and open green spaces, we strongly believe in the importance of outdoor play. Whether in our 'Kiddibus' - a six-seater power assisted buggy bus for the under 2's or on the 'Walkadile' - a 6 person harness for the older children to walk safely and independently, all age groups enjoy plenty of fun and educational outings. Our favourite spaces include Osier Crescent park, Coldfall woods, Hollickwood playground and Highgate Woods.
